A new analysis shows how many gallons of urine are in swimming pools
If you usually hang out in swimming pools, you may see them in a different way now. People pee a lot in pools and it’s not an urban legend. A Canadian study that analyses the concentration of a sweetener in pool water confirmed that.
Acesulfame potassium, known as E950 is an artificial sweetener used in the majority of industrial foods. When it’s expelled by urine, it’s kept unaltered. According to the study, a researcher measured the quantity of E950 in two swimming pools for three weeks. So they discovered that a 220,000-gallon pool (one-third the size of an Olympic pool) contained about 20 gallons of pee, and the second pool was a 110,000-gallon pool containing about 8 gallons of pee.
Another analysis of 8 jacuzzies revealed upper levels of urine. Moreover, in a jacuzzi of a hotel has been found a concentration of the sweetener 3 times greater than in the worst swimming pool. On the whole, researchers found urine in 100% of the time analyzing pools and jacuzzi.
You cannot say when someone is peeing in a pool, but urine reacts with some disinfectant used in pool water and may cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory tract.
