When you are under pressure the urge to pee is more intense

The urge to pee is a very common situation, especially when you are nervous. In normal conditions, the bladder is relaxed and it fills with urine coming from the kidneys. In contrast, the bladder’s external sphincter is closed, to make sure that urine doesn’t leak out.

Normally a bladder can hold up to 2 cups of urine. When the muscular sac is full, the bladder sends a signal through the spine up to the brain, so the bladder can contract and the external sphincter can relax, letting a stream of pee flow.

Doctors aren’t sure why people urge to pee when they are nervous, but researchers tried to give some explanations.

One answer is that when you are nervous or anxious, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode. This may increase the kidney’s production of urine.

Another answer is that when you’re nervous, your muscles tense up, and this also happens to the bladder. So this makes you want to pee.

So, if you feel the need to pee and you don’t have access to a bathroom, it’s recommended to relax your mind and muscles or to distract yourself.
