The reason behind multiple layers

If we take a look at a toilet paper roll, we can see it is at least 2 or more ply. The more expansive rolls can be also 5-ply. Why aren’t they made of one single layer? The reason is that multiple layers make paper softer and more resistant because all the sheets can better hold air. In addition, this structure facilitates the dissolution in the toilet after flushing.
